My name is Deborah Kevin (pronounced KEY-vin), and I'm the founder and chief inspiration officer at Highlander Press, a mid-sized publisher focused on nonfiction and childrens' books that make an impact (or start a movement).
Ever since I taught myself to read at four-years-old, I have had my nose stuck in a book. The day my mother taught me to "draw" my signature, which enabled me to get my first library card, was a magical day as it unlocked mysteries, biographies, and romance novels (ooh la la). Never in my wildest little girl dreams did I envision the day I'd be an author and a publisher (especially during those long hours spent crunching numbers as a CPA and auditor)!
Long before I launched Highlander Press, friends and colleagues came to me for editing and writing advice. (I started and penned more company newsletters!) It was only after I left the corporate world in 2010 that I started to dream of a different life for myself--a life surrounded by words and books! My graduate degree in publishing from Western Colorado University sealed the deal: I was in love with publishing!
And, as if owning and running my publishing company weren't enough, I'm also an author. I've published You've Written Your Book. Now What?, a nonfiction guide for authors who want to self-publish. I attended Stanford University's Creative Writing cohort, where I penned Finding Grace, an historical fiction novel about two children solving the mystery of their mother's disappearance, which will be published by Highlander Press in 2023. A second novel, Free Skate, is underway.
I live in Baltimore, Maryland, with the love of my life Rob, two sons, and a rambunctious pup named Fergus--that is, when we're not off discovering the world!
